Maclellan Island is one of the most prominent features of downtown Chattanooga. But, we have a massive problem.
The island is eroding away at a rate of 3,500 square feet per year. That's the footprint of a three-bedroom house!
We've been informed that vegetated riprap is the most ecologically-sound and sustainable path forward. However, riprap installation will cost $2-$5 million dollars. We need the community's support to help SAVE THE ISLAND.

Shoreline stabilization is most important on the western tip of the island where the dock is located. It is critical to protect this 400-ft section in order to maintain access to our dock.
Note the sedimentation which shows the previous extent of the island. The average amount it has eroded away is 1 acre per decade. Photo courtesy of Chattanooga Tourism

In addition to shoreline stabilization, we need to clear the island of invasive species. Our world-famous Maclellan Island Goats are already hard at work with this effort, but more needs to be done.
A 10-year invasive species removal plan has been proposed, but we can't do this without volunteer help. Sign up to volunteer here!
