Chattanooga Birdathon - Getting Started
How Do I Birdathon?
Team Or Individual? You can participate as an individual (adults and kids) and as a team (although there will not be prizes for adult teams) by only counting birds you yourself identify as an individual and then submitting a combined list as a team. Teams can be up to 35 individuals (to allow classes to participate as one team).
Register As A Participant. Visit the registration page at www.chattanoogabirdathon.myevent.com. Don't forget to mark which team, if any, you are a part of.
Raise Pledges. The next step is to collect pledges. Ask your friends, parents, parents’ friends, colleagues, neighbors, acquaintances, your Facebook friends, and anyone else you can think of to sponsor you.
You can download the sponsorship form here to help you keep up with your pledges.
When people agree to sponsor you, they will commit to donate the amount of money they choose per bird species you or your team identifies during a set time period (we’ll talk more about the rules later). For example, if they pledge $1 for your individual bird count and you identify 40 different bird species, they will donate $40 to CAS. Your sponsors can give their pledges to you (cash or check) to be brought to Audubon Acres or pay them online through the registration page.
Find Birds. You can look for birds on your own or with others. CAS has a full line of programs for birdathon participants (link) that are especially helpful for beginning birders. Bring your binoculars (or borrow a pair from us) and your list and come learn how to bird! We’ll help you find and identify birds.
Each time you add a bird to your list, record when and where you saw it.
You may choose to head out to your favorite haunts by yourself or with your team, but you’re welcome to join our guided walks as well--the more experts the better! You can go birding anywhere within the included counties (see “How,What,Why”) and count bird species any time during the competition period.
Keep A List. How you keep a list is up to you, but it must contain four things:
Collect & Turn In Pledges Your sponsors can give their pledges to you (cash or check) to be brought to Audubon Acres or pay them online through the registration page. All pledges must be turned in by the deadline (see “How,What,Why”) to be counted towards team or individual prizes.
But Most Importantly... Have Fun!
We hope that the Chattanooga Birdathon is a fun and educational experience for you, your team, your classmates, and your family. Birds are amazing creatures that are everywhere around us. Our fondest hope is that this event will leave you better able to find, identify, and enjoy the tremendous variety of avian life all around us.
Happy Birding!
