Journey back in time to the 1800's when life was much simpler—or was it? See for yourself what it was like for our ancestors as they carved out an existence in the wilderness. Experience the sights, the sounds, the smells, and the work that made up their everyday life. See demonstrations of such skills as wood tools, butter churning, apple cider press, corn shucking, corn husk doll making, and much more!  Don't forget to visit historic Spring Frog Cabin for a cabin tour, which is open during Pioneer Days.

Walker Farm Pioneer Days is a hands-on, living history event geared for elementary aged students and families.  Visitors move through different historical demonstrations which showcase period skills or jobs.  Reservations are required for all attendees.

While some demonstrations provide small samples of period food or drink, lunches are not available for purchase and should be brought from home.  Thank you for your interest in this very special event.  We look forward to welcoming you and your group to our sanctuary this November.

We would be remiss if we didn't acknowledge the Cherokee people who called this area home and were forcibly removed during the 1800s. As always during Pioneer Days, we'll have stations educating folks about the Trail of Tears, and showing examples of pre-removal Cherokee life.

Frequently ask questions

Why are only some of the demonstrators the same each day?
Our demonstrators all have varied availability and not all demonstrators can participate all six days of the festival.

Do I need to pay for my 3-year-old to attend?
Yes. 80% of our stations are hands-on demonstrations where children and those young at heart can taste, touch, and experience pioneer life. We've found that even little ones want to participate in the festivities.

Can I purchase tickets when I arrive?
During the weekday you need to pre-purchase your tickets, due to the number of elementary schools that reserve tickets for field trips. (Chaperones for elementary school children may purchase tickets onsite the day of their child's field trip, we recommend they pre-purchase due to limited parking spaces.)
General Public can purchase tickets on-site on Saturday. We recommend you pre-purchase tickets due to our limited parking spaces.

Can I bring my dog to the event?
Pets are not allowed on the property. This is for the comfort and protection of the wildlife and their habitat.

Will there be food at the event?
There will be a Kettle Corn demonstrator at the event demonstrating making Kettle Corn and selling bags of Kettle corn, but at this time we do not have a vendor selling lunches.

Is there a Group Rate or discount for the event?
Not at this time, the only discount we have is for members of CAS.

Volunteer For Pioneer Days
Chattanooga Audubon Society is in search of local artisans who are blacksmiths, potters, broom makers, basket weavers, Long gun demonstration, hunters camp, kettle corn, candle stick makers, bees wax candle, soap makers, paper crafts, musical instruments, weaving, quilters, sheep sheering, period demonstrators, rope makers, 1800s farming etc…. to set up demonstrations for our Annual Pioneer Days event. If you or someone you know is interested in demonstrating at this event, please contact our Education Director Jessica Whitehorn at [email protected] or call 423-892-1499
Buzzsaw Toy Making Station
We could use some assistance with making 2in diameter wood circles. This is a perfect project for those who are not able to volunteer at a station the days of Pioneer Days but would still like to assist us.
These circles will need to have 2 hole drilled into them like a button. They will be used at a station during Pioneer Days where the students will get to make and take a buzzsaw toy home with them.
If you would like to assist us with this project, please email [email protected]. You would be welcome to come to Audubon Acres and collect limbs that would fit that size range.
We would need the cut pieces no later than November 15th, 2024  to Audubon Acres 900 N Sanctuary Rd Chattanooga TN.

We would need roughly 3000 of these cut. We are asking anyone who signs up to commit to making at least 250 of the circles.

Here is a video of the toy so you can see what the pieces will need to look like. https://youtu.be/dQDJw2Tyd00
